Daily Alchemy 004: Set an Intention
Turn an ordinary moment into a conscious one.
Setting an intention can sound almost too simple to matter, but that is exactly why I love this practice. You already shower. You already bathe. You already drink water. Instead of adding another task to your healing, use something you interact with every day as a reminder to become present.
Water is essential to nearly every system in the human body, and its molecular structure is constantly forming and breaking hydrogen bonds. There are also spiritual traditions and more controversial experiments, including the work popularized by Masaru Emoto, that have explored the idea that intention may influence water. Those claims have not been established by mainstream science, so I don’t think we need to turn them into scientific fact to appreciate the practice.
The intention is doing something important within you.
When you consciously pause and give meaning to an ordinary action, you interrupt autopilot. You direct your attention. You remind your mind and body of the state you want to practice. So the next time you step into the shower, instead of immediately thinking about everything you need to do that day, feel the water touching your body and set an intention.
“This water cleanses my mind, body, soul, and spirit. I release what I no longer need to carry. I return to myself renewed.”
You can do the same thing before drinking a glass of water. Hold it for a moment and decide what you want the act to represent.
Peace. Clarity. Healing. Gratitude. Love. Renewal.
Then drink it slowly and allow yourself to be present with the intention you chose.
Whether you understand this spiritually as speaking intention into water or psychologically as using water as a sensory cue for mindfulness, the practice is ultimately the same: You are consciously choosing what you want to reinforce within yourself.
Try It Today
Before your next shower, bath, or glass of water, pause.
Take one breath.
Choose one intention.
Speak it aloud or silently.
Then allow the physical experience of the water to become your reminder.
You don’t need a complicated ritual to practice consciousness. Sometimes alchemy looks like taking something you already do every day and doing it with intention.
